Greetings. As we head toward the holidays and contemplate a trying winter, I want to compile recommendations from you, our loyal subscribers. We’ll start this week with your book and article recommendations (recent discoveries or all-time favorites, fiction or non, an article that spoke to you… ALL welcome). We’ll have several more topics in the coming weeks, culminating in our December 21 “Surveying the Wreckage” special edition of the newsletter, which will include all of your recommendations. Please comment and engage below!
Aw, great question Ben... I love books. In addition to the Libby app if you are a bibliophile like myself I recommend the Scribd app ($10/month for unlimited books and audiobooks) - they don't have every book but most of the ones I'm reading are there :) Top reads so far... bell hooks- All About Love, Jose Andres - We Fed an Island: The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico. One Meal at a Time, and Sonya Renee Taylor - The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love. Take care of YOU folx!
Scribd <--- *eyes emoji* Thank you for the tips, Jamila! I have listened to Sonya Renee Taylor's brilliance on a couple of podcasts, and I need to pick up her book.
I discovered the Libby app this summer and have listened to some really great books since including Alicia Keys "More Myself," Brené Brown "Dare to Lead," Austin Channing Brown "I'm Still Here," and Ta-Nehisi Coates "Between the World and Me." Brené Brown's Unlocking Us and Dare to Lead podcasts are also a favorite listen right now. I'm also reading the hard copy of Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha's "What the Eyes Don't See" and hope to finish that over one of the upcoming breaks. Thank you for compiling this great weekly newsletter!
I would highly recommend the audiobook version of Alicia Keys book as she sings, plays the piano, and has many guest cameos who also read an intro to each chapter--I finished the 9+ hour book in days as I stayed up late listening because I just couldn't put it down!
Thanks for the links! I'm reading Michelle Obama's Becoming right now. So good! Highly recommend. I also got The Greatest Beer Run Ever for my husband for Christmas about the adventures of a marine vet who finds a way to bring some beers to the soldiers and marines from his neighborhood fighting in Vietnam.
If people are looking for a good laugh, I recommend Alexandra Petri's (WaPo opinion columnist) collection, Nothing is Wrong And Here is Why. It is a hysterical running commentary of the last 4 or so years.
I have been reading "fun books" just to give my brain a break. This weekend I just started reading "Get a Life, Chloe Brown" by Talia Hibbert. It is a funny/humorous romance fiction novel. I hope to over winter break finally read Michelle and Barack Obama's autobiographies and finish "White Fragility".
No problem. I feel in our jobs we spend some much time being "deep thinkers" with article or film discussions, webinars, or general conversations that after a while our brains need a break and read, watch, or do something that is silly.
Agreed. I feel the same about streaming too. I've noticed I don't have the bandwidth for super intense or demanding shows... I'm preferring easy viewing experiences that don't always require my full attention.
Untamed by Glennon Doyle. I listened to it and then bought it because it like to reference it from time to time. its written in shirt stories which makes it very manageable.

agreed- I loved listening to More Myself. I learned so much about Alicia and loved the music that goes along with it.
^^^^ now that is a recommendation, Kristan!

I echo your sentiments about Becoming, Alison; it's also compelling to listen to the audiobook.
I read Becoming at the beginning of the COVID lockdown in March and loved it. I followed it by watching the documentary of the same name on Netflix!

I love any books by Michael Connelly, especially the Harry Bosch series! Recently I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Jessica Simpson's book.

I appreciate you naming the need for a mix, Tiffany. With so much happening in the world, books can provide an escape...

I agree. I have started a MCU Marathon where I am rewatching all the Marvel films in timeline order through Disney+.

We can get behind a short stories format, Rachel!
